LIMPOPO – Khanyisa Education Centre learners were among the top young scientists recognised at the Mopani Eskom Science Fair, recently held at Mopani TVET College in Phalaborwa.

The school was named the best-performing school at the regional science fair, while three learners received special awards and smartwatches.

Three learners honoured

Nkateko Maluleke won best development project, Hlayiseka Hlungwani received best innovation, and Khanani Masingi was named best energy project.

The fair featured 162 projects, including group projects, presented by 205 learners from Gr 4 to 12 and TVET students at levels 2 to 4.

A year of preparation

Participants qualified for the regional fair after taking part in Eskom Expo activities throughout the year, including workshops and district expos, where they received guidance and feedback from judges, mentors and STEMI professionals.

The projects covered 13 categories, with engineering attracting the most entries at 41, followed by social sciences with 40 and energy with 19.

Backing young talent

Eskom Expo Mopani regional director Cynthia Lebetha praised the learners for their innovation, creativity and problem-solving skills and thanked the organisers, sponsors, judges, teachers and partners for their support.

The awards recognised excellence in scientific research and innovation, with 19 gold, 45 silver and 52 bronze medals presented.

Eskom Expo executive director Parthy Chetty thanked title sponsor Eskom and other sponsors for supporting the event and creating opportunities for young people to develop their skills.
