Phalaborwa’s Eden Square Mall to reopen

Eden Square Mall in Phalaborwa will reopen in July after fire damage, with locals eager for the return of popular shops.

LIMPOPO – One of Phalaborwa’s most popular shopping malls, Eden Square Mall, is set to reopen in July. The announcement was made via the mall’s official Facebook page on May 22, in response to a follower who asked for a specific reopening date.

The follower expressed frustration over the lack of clear updates, commenting: “You are becoming monotonous with the same story over and over. We want updates on the work progress.”

In response, Eden Square replied: “We understand your frustration. The repeated updates weren’t intentional; we’ve just been trying to stay connected while the mall is closed. Eden Square reopens in July, and we’re nearly there! Thanks for your patience.”

The mall has been closed since March 10, when a fire broke out and caused extensive damage. The blaze destroyed several stores, including Exact, Pick n Pay Food and Liquor, and Specsavers.

Other shops sustained partial damage, mostly to their roofs. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported.

Since the incident, many in the local community have expressed frustration over the lack of detailed progress updates. Shoppers have taken to Eden Square’s Facebook page to share their struggles.

One follower mentioned travelling to Tzaneen just to buy a specific toothpaste at Clicks, the only location where it was available.

Many residents say they miss their favourite stores like Pick n Pay, Clicks, and Pep Home.

Others have suggested the mall should consider bringing in retailers like Boxer and Roots. Some are even calling for a McDonald’s, saying the town needs more dining options.

Community member Johnson Qibi added: “My heart bleeds for the temporarily unemployed staff from the affected stores.”
