Mobile kitchens on the rise in Tzaneen

Mobile kitchens are gaining popularity, offering affordable, accessible meals and creating flexible job opportunities amid ongoing economic challenges.

LIMPOPO – In response to ongoing economic challenges, mobile kitchens are becoming an increasingly popular business model in Tzaneen and surrounding areas.

These mobile ventures offer convenient, quality food and drinks while keeping costs low and accessibility high.

One standout is Koffieman, a coffee shop operating from a tuk-tuk, located on Boundary Street opposite Minitzani. Launched in May to coincide with the winter season, Koffieman serves freshly brewed coffee to the local community.

Owner Albert Vermeulen told the Herald that mobility is central to their mission.

“One of the reasons we chose to be mobile is to increase accessibility,” Vermeulen explained. “If an office has eight or more people who want coffee, we can bring it to them. We also attend community and sporting events to reach more customers.”

In Haenertsburg, Mountain Chicken and Game is also making a name for itself. Operating from a trailer, the food business is run by residents Archie Palane and Michelle Holtman. They serve fresh meals mainly at farmers’ markets and local events. Michelle, who acts as head chef, is supported by a small team. They also make burgers with game meat, from there the name.

The Mountain Chicken.

“Having a mobile kitchen allows us to travel directly to the client,” said Palane. “Our setup is more intimate, everything is cooked fresh, and people enjoy watching their food being prepared; it adds a personal touch. We’re also creating small job opportunities without high overheads.”

Looking ahead, the pair hope to grow their business and begin catering for larger events, including private parties.

Another player in the mobile food scene is Blom Pizza, a pizzeria based at 6 Boundary Street in Tzaneen.

They operate a food truck that frequently sets up in Boundary Street or at events in both Tzaneen and Haenertsburg, offering fresh, wood-fired pizza on the go.
