Phalaborwa teen girl makes Springbok Junior rugby team
Tokollo Rasekele (15) earns a spot in the Springbok Junior rugby team, breaking barriers in a male-dominated sport.
PHALABORWA – A 15-year-old girl from Phalaborwa, Tokollo Rasekele, is making headlines by excelling in a sport traditionally dominated by men.
As a passionate rugby player and learner at All Saints College, she has earned a coveted spot in the Springbok Junior team after a very competitive national rugby tournament held in Durban from Thursday, July 10 to Friday, July 15.
Initially, five rugby players from All Saints College were selected to participate in the national competitions, but Rasekele was the only one who advanced to join the prestigious Springbok Junior team.
“I am thrilled, overwhelmed, and honoured to be selected. It is a dream come true to represent South Africa on the world stage, and I am grateful for the opportunity to showcase my skills alongside some of the best young players in the country,” she shared.
She added that the games were challenging but rewarding, pushing her to give her best every time.
“Each match was a test of skill, strategy, and physical fitness. Despite the challenges, I have had amazing experiences on the field and learned so much. We have worked hard to overcome obstacles and achieve our goals. It has been an incredible journey, and I am excited to see what the future holds,” said Rasekele.
Rasekele’s journey into rugby began at an early age. She recalls playing several sports as a child, but rugby quickly stood out as her passion. “I remember watching the Springboks play and being inspired by their skill, teamwork, and dedication,” she said.
She stated that she started playing rugby in primary school and later joined a local club, where she sharpened her skills. Her hard work eventually paid off when she began representing her province at various age levels, leading to her national selection.
Raised in a family that embraces the sport, Rasekele was inspired by her father, Archiebald Sekhula, a former rugby player whose medals and trophies motivated her to pursue the sport seriously.
“Growing up, I never really thought about rugby being dominated by men. For me, it was just a sport I loved playing, and I was lucky to have a supportive family and community that encouraged me to pursue my passion. I chose rugby because I enjoyed the physicality, the strategy, and the camaraderie with my teammates,” she explained.
Her coach, Fabiano Shilongo, praised her for her discipline and focus.
“I am very proud of her achievements. She is level-headed, listens attentively, and takes instructions seriously. Her success is a result of her passion for rugby and her intense dedication,” he said.
Shilongo also sees a promising future for her beyond the rugby field.
“She has a sharp eye and exceptional physical strength. I believe she will do extremely well, especially in the field of sports science. There is no doubt she has what it takes,” he added.
