Haenertsburg community invited to preserve cemetery stories
Families and friends are encouraged to share memories of loved ones for a community book celebrating those buried or remembered at the Haenertsburg Cemetery.
TZANEEN – The memories of those laid to rest at the Haenertsburg Cemetery will soon be preserved in more ways than one, as a community project aims to collect the personal stories of those who knew and loved them.
The initiative follows the recent numbering of graves in the cemetery, making it easier for families and visitors to locate their loved ones’ resting places. Now, organisers are inviting residents, friends and relatives to help ensure that the lives behind the names are not forgotten.
Community memories sought for lasting tribute
Project organiser René Annandale said the goal is to compile a book featuring stories about people buried in the Haenertsburg Cemetery, as well as those whose ashes have been laid there.
“My idea is to collect stories from friends and family on people who are buried in the Haenertsburg cemetery, or whose ashes are laid there,” Annandale explained. “Multiple people can contribute stories on the same person, and that won’t be a problem.”
Contributors are encouraged to submit simple, heartfelt recollections rather than formal biographies or literary works.
Stories can range from just a few lines to a full page and may include favourite memories, words of wisdom shared by the deceased, the impact they had on others, their hobbies, occupations or where they lived.
“Even a short recollection of good advice they gave, a happy memory, or how they made a difference in someone’s life would be wonderful,” she said.
“These are the stories that keep memories alive.”
Book to preserve local history
The project is intended to become a lasting record of the people who helped shape the Haenertsburg community and preserve their legacies for future generations.
Contributors should be aware that submissions will be included without compensation, as the completed book will be published as a community fundraising initiative.
Proceeds from book sales will support the Haenertsburg Cottages, making it a project that gives back to the local community.
“It is truly a project by the community, for the community,” she added.
How to contribute your story
Community members who would like to contribute are asked to email their stories by December 30, 2026. The book is expected to be published during 2027.
