Man in court over Phalaborwa traffic altercation

A 53-year-old man faces multiple charges after a reported altercation with traffic officers on the R71 road.

PHALABORWA – A 53-year-old man, Edmond Nduna Mbhetse, appeared before the Phalaborwa Magistrate’s Court on Monday (July 28), facing several charges following an alleged altercation with traffic officials.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says that Mbhetse has been charged with intimidation, assault common, crimen injuria (the unlawful and intentional violation of another person’s dignity or privacy), and failure to comply with a lawful instruction issued by an officer of the law.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred a week earlier along the R71 public road near Phalaborwa.

“According to preliminary reports, traffic officers were conducting routine duties when they stopped a bakkie. The motorist, later identified as Mbhetse, then engaged in a heated verbal exchange with the officers. The situation reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation, prompting the officials to lay charges,” says Ledwaba.

The case was subsequently reported to the local police, who launched an investigation that led to Mbhetse’s arrest.

He was released on bail of R10 000, and the case has been postponed to August 27 to allow for further police investigations.

Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
