LIMPOPO – Motorists entering Giyani are now being welcomed by a giant “Giyani” sign erected on a mountain overlooking the entrance to the town, in a project aimed at creating a new tourism attraction for the municipality.

The large sign, visible to travellers using the R81 and R529 roads linking Giyani to Tzaneen and surrounding areas, has drawn attention from residents and visitors alike.

The landmark resembles the famous Hollywood sign in Los Angeles in the United States, and is expected to become one of the town’s most recognisable features.

Mountain earmarked for tourism development

Greater Giyani Municipality spokesperson Steve Mavunda said the sign forms part of the municipality’s broader vision to develop the mountain into a tourism destination.

“The municipality plans to make that place a tourist attraction where people will be able to hike up the mountain and enjoy panoramic views of the town from the top,” said Mavunda.

He explained that the project is still under development and that more infrastructure will be added before the site is officially opened to the public as a fully-fledged tourist attraction.

“There is still more construction work that needs to be done to achieve what the municipality aims for. Once all the necessary facilities have been completed, the area will offer visitors an opportunity to enjoy the scenery and experience the town from a different perspective,” he said.

Entrance fee being considered

Mavunda added that the municipality is also considering introducing a small entrance fee for visitors wishing to access the site once development has been completed.

“When everything is in place, and the site is fully developed with the facilities expected of a tourist attraction, the municipality may introduce a small fee for people who want to hike up the mountain,” he said.

Boost expected for local economy

The initiative is expected to enhance Giyani’s appeal as a destination for both local and domestic tourists while creating a landmark that promotes the town’s identity. Although the mountain sign is already attracting attention from passing motorists, municipal officials say the project will only reach its full potential once the remaining development work has been completed.

The municipality believes the attraction will not only encourage tourism but also contribute to local economic activity by drawing more visitors to the town, while also adding a little to the municipality’s revenue collection.
