Multiple weekend wildfires hit Tzaneen areas

Letaba FPA battled multiple wildfires in Haenertsburg and Tzaneen as hot, dry, windy conditions pushed the Fire Danger Index to high levels.

TZANEEN – The Letaba Fire Protection Association (FPA) had a demanding weekend as multiple fires broke out across Haenertsburg and Tzaneen, fueled by sudden hot, dry, and windy weather conditions.

According to Rouan Snyman from the Letaba FPA, the Fire Danger Index (FDI) reached the high orange level, signaling severe fire risk.

“It was a very busy weekend, with very hot and dry conditions. The major fire we had up in the Haenertsburg area is still under investigation, but it climbed into a pine plantation where the dry, windy conditions and heavy fuel load on the ground made it very difficult to fight,” he explained.

Firefighting teams from various companies and landowners in the area worked alongside contracted aircraft from Kishugu Aviation to contain the blaze. While significant progress was made on Friday, the fire flared up again on Saturday due to rising temperatures and strong winds.

Snyman expressed concern over residents who continue to burn rubbish and garden waste illegally, despite repeated warnings.

“There are still numerous people who are not abiding by the law and burning on these very hot days. When the South African Weather Service issues a fire danger warning, no fires are allowed under any circumstances,” he warned.

The official fire prohibition period, set by the Letaba FPA, runs from August 1 until the end of October, or until the region receives at least 50mm of widespread rainfall. Snyman stressed that the rules are clear and widely communicated through the FPA’s WhatsApp group, Facebook page, and public platforms. “Ignorance is no excuse in court,” he said.

Over the weekend, approximately 10 fires were reported in the Greater Tzaneen region, adding pressure to already stretched resources. With at least two and a half months left of the fire season, Snyman expressed hope that residents will comply with safety regulations and help ensure a safe season ahead.

On Tuesday, August 26, the South African Weather Service issued a warning of FDI levels over 75 for Limpopo.
