Free access to Kruger in September

Sanparks celebrates 20 years of SA National Parks Week with free entry to most parks from September 22-26 nationwide.

PHALABORWA – Sanparks will mark the 20th anniversary of SA National Parks Week with a celebratory event at the Mopani Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park (KNP), on Sunday, September 21.

The KNP will offer free access to South Africans from September 22 to 26 as part of the nationwide campaign.

This annual initiative, which grants free entry to most of the country’s 21 national parks, will run from September 22 to 26, with selected parks extending the offer to 27 and 28 September.

Since its launch in 2006, SA National Parks Week has grown into one of Sanparks’ most successful programmes, drawing thousands of day visitors each year and inspiring a deeper connection to South Africa’s natural, cultural and historical heritage.

In a statement, Sanparks says visitors are reminded that free access does not include accommodation or other tourist activities. Dates for free entry differ across parks, and the full schedule is available on the Sanparks website at www.sanparks.org.

The initiative fosters a sense of pride and shared responsibility in conserving the nation’s protected areas. Sanparks uses the week to highlight its inclusive approach to conservation, underscoring the role of partnerships with local communities, businesses, scientists, and tourists in sustainable development.

“National Parks Week is more than just a free pass, it’s a chance to reconnect with the spaces that define our identity as South Africans,” Sanparks said.
