PHALABORWA – Namakgale Shinkyokushinkai karate students Denzel Mashapu and Amani Dihangwane have returned home with trophies and medals after securing top positions at a national Shinkyokushinkai karate tournament held at Burgersdorp Junior High School in Tzaneen.

A weekend of competition

The tournament took place from Saturday, August 8, to Sunday, August 9, attracting competitors who battled for honours in various weight categories.

Mashapu, 17, delivered an impressive performance in the junior division, securing first position in the u/60kg category. His victory earned him a trophy and a gold medal.

Dihangwane, 21, also produced a strong performance, finishing second in the u/55kg category and receiving a trophy and a silver medal for his achievement.

Nerves, noise and unfamiliar opponents

The competition presented several challenges for the athletes, including the fear of injury, pressure to perform, large crowds and noise, which sometimes made it difficult for competitors to hear their coaches during bouts.

They also had to adapt quickly to opponents they had never faced before.

“Winning made all the training pay off”

Mashapu described the tournament as a demanding but rewarding experience, particularly after securing victory in the final.

“The tournament was tough but worth it. The nerves, the fights and the waiting were challenging, but winning the final match made all the training pay off,” he said.

Dihangwane said he was pleased with his performance and expressed respect for all the competitors.

“It was an amazing experience. I fought my best and came second. Respect to everyone who competed,” he said.

Coach praises discipline and focus

Their coach, sensei Sydeck Monyela, praised both athletes for their discipline, focus and commitment throughout the tournament.

“It was a challenging competition, but our karate students showed discipline and stayed focused. First and second place, I am honoured to be their Sensei,” said Monyela.
