Shongani man gets two life sentences for rape

Nkowankowa Regional Court sentenced Rady Bayiza Makhubele to two life terms for rape of a minor, plus additional jail time for pornography offences.

TZANEEN – On Friday (August 29), Nkowankowa Regional Court convicted and sentenced Rady Bayiza Makhubele (46) to two life imprisonments for two counts of rape, five years for assault, and three years for exposure or display of or causing of pornography to children.

Limpopo police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, says the court heard that in September 2018, Makhubele lured three children to his home, where he sexually assaulted them, forced them to watch pornography, and subsequently raped one of them.

The same child was raped again the following day when they all returned to Makhubele’s home.

The matter was only reported to police in October 2018 by the victim’s mother.

The child was taken to the nearest hospital for medical attention, where the medical team confirmed sexual assault and rape.

The case was transferred to Tzaneen FCS and assigned to Sergeant Sharon Phumuzo Mabongo, who successfully located and arrested Makhubele in the following weeks.

“At the time, it was also noted that the accused was on parole for another rape case that was committed in Gauteng province,” says Ledwaba.

His sentence was as follows:

  • Count 1: Rape – life imprisonment
  • Count 2: Rape – life imprisonment
  • Count 3: Exposure or display of or causing of pornography to children – 3 years imprisonment
  • Count 4: Sexual assault – 5 years imprisonment.
