Tributes flood in after N1 head-on collision claims the life of DJ Poizen and leaves DJ Chymamusique in critical condition.

TZANEEN – The Limpopo music scene is shocked and saddened after the sudden death of Cavin Masetla, stage name DJ Poizen, who lost his life in a head-on collision on the N1 near the Ysterberg mountain near Mokopane.

The 33-year-old musician was travelling with fellow house music star Chymamusique when the crash occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning. Poizen died at the scene, while Chymamusique remains in critical condition in hospital.

Four of the victims were burnt beyond recognition, while two others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital.

MEC Violet Mathye expressed deep sadness over the incident, extending condolences to the families and urging motorists to exercise caution on the province’s roads.

“Our hearts are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this tragic accident,” she said. “We also wish a speedy recovery to those who were injured. As a department, we are deeply concerned by the rise in crashes along the Ysterberg mountain route, especially in the early morning hours when visibility is poor.”

Meanwhile, tributes have poured in from across South Africa’s music industry.

Fellow musician Dwson in a heartfelt post:

“Your humility, selflessness, and consistency left a mark on us all. The Voltage sound remains timeless. Your spirit and basslines live forever.”

Groove Cartel SA called Poizen “an icon,” posting:

There is a South African “sound” that one can easily recognise. This sound took years to mould particularly in the dance scene. When we once yearned to belong and chased global trends, it was Poizen and the likes who carved an authentic South African dance music groove…. Today we celebrate an icon who undoubtedly pioneered a new wave to Deep House Music.

His passing stills a heartbeat in the South African music scene, beats born in Limpopo and carried to dance floors across the country.

Authorities have confirmed that investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
