Phalaborwa Gr R learner shines in district puzzle competition
Five-year-old Vunene Baloyi from BN Ntsanwisi Primary in Lulekani claimed third place at a district puzzle-building competition in Giyani.
PHALABORWA – At just five years old, Vunene Baloyi, a Gr R learner from BN Ntsanwisi Primary School in Lulekani, is already proving her exceptional problem-solving skills.
The young, bright learner secured third place at a puzzle-building competition held at Giyani Comprehensive School on Wednesday, August 27.
She received a trophy, a bronze medal, a certificate of excellence, and an A4 whiteboard in recognition of her achievement.
The competition began at the circuit level at Fauna Park, where Baloyi secured second place. She then advanced to the cluster level in Gravelotte, again finishing in second position, before concluding her impressive run at the district level.
Her teacher, Cornes Malesa, described Baloyi as a friendly and dedicated learner. “Vunene is willing to explore new things and always interacts positively with her teachers. She does not accept failure and is committed to whatever she is doing,” said Malesa.
Baloyi’s preparation for the competition involved regular practice with puzzles, following the pictures inside the puzzle boxes. She was trained to complete puzzles within set time limits to develop speed and accuracy.
Malesa explained that the main challenge Baloyi faced was working too slowly, which was overcome by timed practice exercises. “Learners who are interested in building puzzles are given opportunities to learn. I encourage and help those willing to develop their skills, and Baloyi was one of those learners,” she added.
School principal Maureen Mhlongo-Mhlarhi expressed pride in Baloyi’s performance, highlighting that the achievement at such a young age reflects exceptional focus, determination, and problem-solving ability.
