PHALABORWA – Police seized 11 bags of dagga worth an estimated R1.2m after a vehicle was found abandoned along the R71 between Gravelotte and Phalaborwa.

Two men, aged 32 and 41, were arrested in connection with the seizure and are expected to appear in the Namakgale Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (August 25).

Security guards spot abandoned vehicle

The incident happened on Sunday morning, after two security guards spotted a vehicle parked off the road near a bridge.

The guards approached the vehicle believing it may have been involved in an accident and discovered five bags of dagga inside.

More bags found under bridge

They alerted members of the Gravelotte police, who searched the area and found another six bags concealed underneath the bridge.

All 11 bags were seized and the two suspects were arrested on charges relating to dealing in dagga.

Police commissioner commends guards

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers commended the security guards for alerting police and the officers for responding to the information.

“This seizure has disrupted the movement of a substantial quantity of dagga. We urge communities and security partners to remain alert and report suspicious activity to the police,” said Scheepers.
