GTM is greenest in Mopani

The Greater Tzaneen Municipality won the district leg of the Limpopo Greenest Municipality Competition and will represent Mopani at the provincial round.

TZANEEN – The Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) was crowned the winner of the district leg of the Limpopo Greenest Municipality Competition.

The announcement was made at the Mopani Disaster Centre, where GTM emerged victorious over four other municipalities to claim the R50 000 cash prize and the honour of representing the Mopani District at the provincial stage.

A consistent top performer in the competition, which was previously known as the Cleanest Town Competition, GTM has long been recognised for its community-driven sustainability initiatives, effective waste management programmes, and innovative approaches to keeping the municipality clean and eco-friendly.

Greater Giyani Municipality took second place, earning R40 000, while Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality secured third place and R25 000.

In the next competition, GTM will be competing against other district winners in the provincial round, scheduled for November 11 to 13.

Last year, GTM narrowly missed the provincial title, losing to Polokwane Municipality by a single percentage point, a result the team is eager to overturn this time around.

Expressing her delight, Cllr Maria Mmola, head of the health portfolio, said the achievement reflected the municipality’s ongoing efforts to promote environmental responsibility and community participation.

GTM community services director Cate Ntimbani echoed the excitement but noted that the real challenge lies ahead.

“We are proud of this recognition, but our eyes are firmly set on the provincial competition. We’ve learned from last year’s close result, and we’re coming back stronger to claim that top spot,” she said.
