Dr Ramothwala steps down from Letaba Hospital

Respected doctor Mikia Ramothwala has stepped down as Letaba Hospital’s senior clinical manager after nine years, citing new opportunities ahead.

TZANEEN – Dr Mikia Ramothwala, a highly respected healthcare professional in Tzaneen, has resigned from his role as senior clinical manager at Letaba Hospital, citing new opportunities as his reason for departure.

Ramothwala became acting senior clinical manager at the hospital at just 28 and was officially appointed at 30 in 2018. Reflecting on his rapid rise, he described the experience as daunting but driven by passion and dedication.

During his nine years at Letaba, Ramothwala left a lasting impact by strengthening clinical governance and expanding specialist services, providing care to many Mopani patients who otherwise could not afford private healthcare.

He revealed that his resignation had been considered for four months and admitted that signing the letter was difficult due to his deep attachment to the hospital and community. It has been suggested that he might be moving to Tembisa Hospital or entering a political role; he has neither confirmed nor denied these speculations.

In addition to his hospital duties, Ramothwala chairs the ANC national executive committee’s health committee, frequently travelling with Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi to engage healthcare workers about the National Health Insurance.

Outside of medicine, he is married to a fellow doctor and a father of three. He also owns a spaza shop in his hometown of Botshabelo village, Mokwakwaila, aiming to boost the local economy by creating jobs and supporting community development.

A graduate of Merensky Agricultural High School, Ramothwala earned his medical degree from the University of Cape Town. He thanked Letaba Hospital and the local community for their support and hinted at pursuing bigger ventures in the future.

Dr Ngoako Mohale has been appointed as the acting senior clinical manager following Ramothwala’s departure.
