Giyani gospel artist hits all the right notes

Psalmist Moshe Mokwena blends heartfelt worship with modern gospel sounds, using his music to uplift and inspire believers across Giyani and beyond.

LIMPOPO – In the heart of Giyani, where faith and music often walk hand-in-hand, a gospel voice has been rising steadily, that of Psalmist Moshe Mokwena.

Known for his soulful blend of traditional gospel and contemporary worship, Mokwena is quickly becoming a household name among gospel lovers both in his community and beyond.

Raised by a single mother in Giyani, Mokwena’s introduction to music was not through fame or fortune, but through the humble pews of his village church. At just eight years old, he was already singing in the church choir and experimenting with writing his own songs.

What began as a childhood passion soon turned into a calling that has shaped the course of his life.

“Music is not just performance for me,” Mokwena says. “It is worship, it is testimony, and it is my way of ministering to people who may be going through the same trials I have faced.”

Mokwena’s music is rooted in the lived experiences of faith. His songs are not shy about confronting hardship, loss, poverty, and struggle, but always carry with them the assurance of God’s presence and victory.

This honesty has resonated with his listeners, many of whom see their own journeys reflected in his lyrics.

His debut album, Yeso I Nhlamulo, released in 2008, marked his entry into the gospel music scene.

It was raw, heartfelt, and set the tone for what would become his signature style: powerful vocals paired with messages of redemption and hope.

Since then, Mokwena has continued to release music that builds on that foundation. His 2015 single Messiah wa Holoka further established his reputation, while Yehova Xikwembu (2022) drew praise for its depth and sincerity.

His most recent release, Magodimo le Mafase (My Special Offering), launched on 15 September 2025, has already sparked conversations among gospel circles, praised for its blend of heartfelt worship and polished production.

One of the most striking aspects of Mokwena’s career is how he navigates between traditional gospel influences and contemporary sounds. His music feels at home both in small rural churches and on digital streaming platforms. This versatility has allowed him to reach younger audiences while staying true to the roots that first nurtured his gift.

“Traditional Gospel taught me the depth of worship,” Mokwena explains. “Contemporary music helps me carry that same depth to new generations.”

With each release, Mokwena is expanding his reach. His ambition is not just to entertain, but to inspire and transform. Plans are already underway for more recordings, live performances, and collaborations that will broaden his audience.

For him, however, the mission remains clear: to use music as a ministry.

“Every song is a seed,” he reflects. “You never know whose life it will touch, or what healing it might bring.”

Fans can find his music on all major streaming platforms and follow him on social media; Facebook, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram, under the name Psalmist Moshe Mokwena.
