Phalaborwa Gate named best KNP entrance

Phalaborwa Gate wins 2025 best entrance award, recognised for outstanding service, staff efficiency, and excellence across KNP operations.

LIMPOPO – Phalaborwa Gate of the Kruger National Park (KNP) has been named the best performing entrance gate for 2025.

The announcement was made during the annual KNP Achievement Awards, held recently in Skukuza.

Phalaborwa Gate earns top 2025 honours

The gate earned the honour after demonstrating excellence in several key areas, including staff efficiency, timely completion of scheduled tasks, administrative performance, stock control, human relations, staff neatness, customer service, net profit, and sales growth.

Regional tourism manager Michelle van der Merwe told the Herald that the team is deeply honoured by the recognition.

“We’re truly honoured to receive the award. This recognition reflects the dedication and teamwork of our staff, and our shared commitment to offering every visitor a warm welcome and an unforgettable Kruger experience. We’re proud to represent Phalaborwa and will continue striving for excellence,” she said.

Awards celebrate excellence across Kruger Park

At the same event, Biyamiti Bush Camp was named best bush camp, while Satara Camp received the camp of the year award.

Lifetime achievement awards were also presented to four individuals who have made contributions to Sanparks through decades of dedicated service.

The recipients were Oupa Manzini, who served for 28 years; Richard Vukwya, who served for 31 years; Kairos Chiloane, who served for 34 years; and James Mdluli, who has served the park for 35 years.

Another major highlight of the ceremony was the Bravery Award, which was presented to individuals who demonstrated exceptional courage in threatening situations. The winners were Albert Mkansi, Katekani Sibuyi, Nicholus Mathebula, and Vusi Lubisi.

Mathebula, who was honoured for saving a friend and colleague from a buffalo attack, told the Herald that the recognition means a great deal to him.

He said the award encourages him to continue working tirelessly.
