LIMPOPO – The Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has conveyed shock and sorrow after a domestic violence incident led to the deaths of two SAPS members in the early hours of Monday (December 8).

Dispute escalates into fatal shooting

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, says initial findings indicate that late on Sunday evening, a 40-year-old Police Sergeant from the Mopani District office went to the rented home of a 31-year-old Police Constable from Ritavi Police Station in Nkowankowa.

A dispute broke out, prompting the Constable to contact Ritavi SAPS for assistance. Officers responded and escorted her to the police station to ensure her safety.

“Although the Sergeant initially left the area, he later diverted from Giyani and drove to Ritavi Police Station. Upon arrival, he found the Constable at the Community Service Centre (CSC) and fatally shot her before turning the gun on himself. Both members were declared dead at the scene,” says Mashaba.

Ritavi police have opened a murder case and an inquest to facilitate further investigation.

SAPS leadership expresses shock and sorrow

Hadebe expressed disappointment, highlighting the tragic timing of the incident as the country observes the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children.

Hadebe also noted that this occurred shortly after SAPS Limpopo hosted the POLMED Symposium, where issues such as domestic violence, mental health, and member well-being were addressed.

“This incident is a stark reminder of the destructive impact of domestic violence, even within our own ranks. We urgently appeal to all members experiencing relationship difficulties, emotional distress, or domestic conflict to seek professional help without delay.”

She also encouraged SAPS personnel to utilise the available Employee Health and Wellness support programmes instead of resorting to violence.

Hadebe extended condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the two deceased officers.

Case handed over to IPID

The matter has been handed over to IPID for further investigation. Additional details will be released as the inquiry continues.
