Hoedspruit residents alarmed by brown, murky tap water
Residents in Hoedspruit report brown, foamy water from household taps, raising serious safety concerns and demanding urgent action.
HOEDSPRUIT – Residents have raised serious concerns after brown, murky water flowed from household taps, sparking fears about water safety and service delivery in the area.
Photos and videos shared by residents show discoloured water filling a household jug, with visible sediment and a strong brown tint. In some instances, the water appeared foamy while running, raising questions about whether it is safe for drinking, cooking, or bathing.
“I opened the tap and the water came out looking like this,” said one concerned resident on the Hoedspruit Town Facebook group. “You wouldn’t even give this to animals, yet this is what we are expected to drink.”

Widespread concerns over water safety
Several residents reported that the problem is not new, saying water quality issues have occurred intermittently, particularly after pipe repairs, water interruptions, or periods of heavy rainfall. However, they say the current situation is more severe than usual.
There is a warning that the discoloured water may indicate the presence of rust, sediment, or other contaminants, and residents are advised not to consume such water until its safety has been confirmed.
“This is unacceptable,” another resident said. “We pay for services, but we are not getting clean water. People have children, elderly relatives, and sick family members who depend on safe water.”

No official response from municipality yet
The issue has sparked frustration on local community groups, where residents are demanding answers from the local municipality.
Many are calling for urgent water testing, transparent communication, and a clear timeline for resolving the problem.
It is currently unclear what the cause of the discolouration is as the municipality has not responded to requests for answers. Possible causes may include ageing infrastructure, pipe damage, sediment disturbance, or problems at water treatment facilities.
Residents are urging the relevant authorities to investigate the matter immediately and to provide clean alternative water sources if the problem persists. Clean water is a basic human right, and residents say they expect swift action to restore confidence in Hoedspruit’s water supply.
