SANRAL closes some Limpopo roads due to flooding

Weather conditions have forced the closure of the R527 near Hoedspruit and R578 towards Giyani due to flooding, with alternative routes provided.

LIMPOPO – The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has announced the temporary closure of two national routes in Limpopo due to severe flooding caused by ongoing heavy rainfall.

The closed roads are:

  • National Route R527 in the Hoedspruit area within the Maruleng Local Municipality. The alternative route is the R40 from Acornhoek through Hoedspruit towards Phalaborwa.
  • National Route R578 from south of Phalaborwa towards Giyani. Motorists should use the R71 towards Tzaneen, then the R36 and R81 to Giyani.

These roads will remain closed until further notice due to rising water levels and unsafe driving conditions.

SANRAL’s Limpopo provincial head, Madoda Mthembu, strongly advised road users to avoid the affected routes and to use the specified alternatives.

“We will communicate further once detailed assessments have been done and the roads are safe to reopen,” he stated.

While the R81 in Giyani, the R36 between Groblersdal and Stofberg, and the R555 between Stofberg and Roossenekal remain open, they are experiencing heavy rainfall.

SANRAL appealed to all motorists to prioritise safety, remain vigilant, and follow official updates.
