Hoedspruit parkrun inspires Acornhoek
A chance coffee-shop conversation has sparked an initiative to bring parkrun to Acornhoek, with Hoedspruit parkrun volunteers supporting their neighbours' first steps.
HOEDSPRUIT – Sometimes the best ideas begin with a simple conversation over coffee, and that is exactly what happened with a new initiative by Hoedspruit parkrun.
A casual chat has grown into a community-driven initiative linking Hoedspruit with its neighbours in Acornhoek, and it might soon bring a parkrun of its own to Acornhoek.
It all started when two Hoedspruit parkrun volunteers, Harm Jan Bouwkneght and Aad Schouten, overheard a conversation at a local coffee shop. Elta Sayiya was talking about the Harry Mnisi Foundation, an organisation dedicated to community development in Acornhoek, a rural area outside Hoedspruit. One phrase caught their attention: “empowerment through participation in sport.”
Curious, they introduced themselves, sparking a lively discussion. The idea soon emerged: why not introduce parkrun, a free, weekly 5km event promoting health, happiness, and community, to Acornhoek?
While starting a parkrun comes with strict requirements, Hoedspruit parkrun immediately offered its support. Acornhoek residents were welcomed to experience the Hoedspruit event firsthand, with transport generously sponsored and assistance provided for registrations and sports kit donations.
“Seeing the enthusiasm from Acornhoek residents has been truly inspiring,” says Ilse Krige of Hoedspruit parkrun. “It is amazing how a simple idea can bring people together, encourage healthy habits, and create opportunities. We’re excited to help them take the first steps towards their own parkrun.”

Participants quickly took to the course, supported by Hoedspruit volunteers who also began exploring potential routes in Acornhoek itself. The goal is to launch a “Run Acornhoek” initiative first, providing a steppingstone towards a full-fledged parkrun once all requirements are met.
This collaboration is part of a wider effort by the Harry Mnisi Foundation to promote sport and community development in Acornhoek.
Their recent sports day was a huge success, and the foundation plans to host similar events twice a year, in June and December.
The events aim to recruit participants, organisers, coaches, and funders, all while fostering a culture of health, activity, and social cohesion.
What started as a simple conversation over coffee has planted a seed in Acornhoek. With care, community spirit, and determination, it could grow into a parkrun that brings fitness, friendship, and opportunity to a whole new community.
