Merensky learner shines at SA schools tennis champs
Gr12 Merensky tennis player JP Botha represented his province in Pretoria, reflecting on discipline, teamwork and lessons learned on court.
LIMPOPO – Gr 12 Merensky Agricultural Academy tennis player is making his mark on and off the court.
In January, JP Botha represented his province at the SA Schools Tennis Championships in Pretoria.
The tournament brought together some of the country’s most talented young players, providing a highly competitive platform for emerging tennis stars.
JP told the Herald that tennis has shaped much of who he is today. He has been part of the first tennis team since Gr 3, when he first began representing his primary school at the top level. Over the years, countless hours of training, early mornings, and demanding matches have taught him valuable life lessons.
“Success doesn’t come without sacrifice,” JP explains. “You have to plan carefully, stay disciplined and keep going, even when things don’t go your way.”
He acknowledges that victory is never guaranteed. “You do not always win,” he says, “but every match teaches you something important about effort and perseverance.”
For JP, losses are not setbacks, but opportunities to grow stronger mentally and technically. While his talent on the court is evident, those who know JP say his team spirit stands out just as much.
He believes sport plays a powerful role in building relationships and strengthening character. “Tennis has taught me who I am,” he says. “It shows you your strengths, but also your weaknesses.”
JP looks up to Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer, whose career has inspired millions around the world.
He admires Federer’s patience, composure under pressure, respect for opponents, and remarkable mental toughness. JP strives to incorporate these qualities into his own game, focussing not only on skill but also on sportsmanship.
Beyond the baseline, JP believes the lessons learned in tennis extend into everyday life.
He often compares life to a tennis match, sharing a simple but meaningful message: “You can’t win without serving.”
To him, this represents the importance of taking initiative, giving of oneself, and contributing positively to others.
He encourages young athletes and members of his community to support one another and work together towards common goals.
“When you give your best, whether in sport, school or relationships, you create opportunities for success,” he says.
