Acid attack reported near Tzaneen mosque
Police are investigating an acid attack near a mosque in Tzaneen after worshippers were targeted following prayers on Friday, leaving one person injured.
TZANEEN – An alleged hate crime is being investigated after an acid bomb was reportedly thrown at Masjid Muslim worshippers following prayers at Agatha St near Adam’s Circle in Tzaneen on Friday, February 20.
According to information circulating within the community, the incident occurred shortly after congregants had concluded their prayers and were leaving the premises when the device was allegedly thrown in their direction. One person sustained injuries and received medical attention.
The motive for the attack remains unclear at this stage, but community members have raised concerns that the incident may have been religiously motivated.

Sgt Garvey Mathye of Tzaneen SAPS confirmed that a case has been opened for investigation.
“We have opened a case, and investigations are ongoing. Once we have more information, we will share it with the Herald and an update will be published,” said Mathye.
Police have not yet confirmed whether the matter is being treated as a hate crime. Authorities are urging anyone with information that may assist the investigation to come forward.
The incident has sparked concern among residents, with calls for calm while law enforcement continues its investigation.
