Tzaneen Chamber calls on community to help ‘save the town’

The Tzaneen Chamber of Commerce says it is shifting focus from business promotion to holding authorities accountable and improving service delivery in the area.

TZANEEN – The Tzaneen Chamber of Commerce is urging local businesses and the broader community to take action to “save Tzaneen.”

Flip Coetzer, a member of the chamber’s executive committee, told the Herald during the AGM luncheon at Tzaneen Country Lodge on Friday, February 13, that the chamber’s focus has shifted.

“The chamber is no longer just about promoting businesses. We now have a bigger task, to save the town of Tzaneen and its surrounding areas,” he said.

To achieve this, the chamber is collaborating with Sakeliga, a national organisation that advocates for responsible governance and has successfully challenged municipalities failing to provide basic services.

“The chamber and Sakeliga are non-political organisations. We are ordinary people who want to see our roads repaired and sewage issues resolved in our communities,” Coetzer explained. “Sakeliga guides us on legal avenues and helps us challenge non-performing government, and we have already seen positive results in some matters raised with local authorities.”

He emphasised that the chamber is more determined than ever to hold government accountable and ensure that it delivers services effectively.

The AGM luncheon was opened by chairperson Naomi Excell, who began by offering condolences for former member Eddie Simpson, who passed away last year, and congratulating Rona McGaffin’s family on the arrival of a new granddaughter, with two more grandchildren expected.

Excell also highlighted upcoming chamber events, including their fundraising golf event, The Greener’s Revenge, with all proceeds going to a worthy cause.

On March 25, the chamber will host its annual awards ceremony (venue to be confirmed), which recognises individuals, businesses, and organisations making a positive impact in the community.
