Phalaborwa rugby star leads Fauna Park to victory

Fauna Park Primary celebrates a victorious day at the Get Into Rugby tournament, highlighted by Mosa Malatjie’s exceptional play.

PHALABORWA – Young rugby star, Mosa Malatjie from Fauna Park Primary School, stole the spotlight at the Get Into Rugby (GIR) tournament on Saturday, March 14, delivering a standout performance that helped his team secure victory and earn him the title of the tournament’s best u/11 player.

The tournament, hosted at Kingfisher Private School, brought together six schools to compete in u/11 and u/13 boys’ and girls’ matches.

Malatjie played a key role in guiding the u/11 boys’ team to a dominant tournament victory.

The young player impressed spectators and coaches alike with his skill, speed, and determination on the field.

Fauna Park teams dominate the tournament

Fauna Park’s u/11 boys’ side began the tournament with a 15-0 victory before going on to overwhelm their next opponents 36-0.

Their performances ensured they finished the day unbeaten and secured gold medals and trophies.

Malatjie’s contribution throughout the matches stood out, earning him recognition as the overall best u/11 player of the day.

The u/13 boys’ team also delivered a strong performance during the tournament.

They opened the match with a 30-0 victory before securing a hard-fought 10-5 win in their second match.

The results saw the team crowned tournament champions, joining their u/11 counterparts in bringing home gold medals and trophies for the school.

Girls’ rugby debut and future goals

While the boys celebrated their success, the tournament also marked an important milestone for Fauna Park’s girls’ rugby team, who were making their debut appearance in the competition.

Although they suffered defeats in their matches, their participation demonstrated the school’s growing commitment to developing rugby among girls.

A sports representative from Fauna Park Primary School described the tournament as a proud moment for the school and its rugby programme.

“Rugby is still relatively new at our school, but the progress we have made in the past five years is starting to show,” said the representative.

The school continues to focus on developing the sport further, particularly among girls, and hopes to provide more opportunities for young players to gain experience on the field.

Fauna Park’s rugby teams will next compete at a tournament scheduled for Saturday, April 18, at Nkowankowa Stadium.

The school has also appealed to the community for sponsorship support, especially for the girls’ team, which is in need of dedicated rugby kits including shirts, rugby shorts, and tights.
