Avocado growers boost skills in Limpopo
Limpopo avocado farmers attended a study group aimed at improving productivity, fruit quality and long-term sustainability.
LIMPOPO – The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in the Mopani district recently hosted an avocado study group at Magalies Boerdery’s Kgapane farm in the Greater Letaba Municipality.
The initiative is aimed at building farmers’ capacity and supporting the government’s goal of inclusive economic growth.
Focus on productivity, quality and sustainability
The study group focussed on equipping avocado farmers with practical knowledge to improve product quality, increase productivity, and remain competitive.
Steven Mantsho of the Subtropical Growers Association (Subtrop) led the session, highlighting key production practices.

He stressed the importance of proper soil sampling and management, adequate water supply, especially during dry periods, and correct fertilisation to support healthy flowering and fruit development.
Mantsho also advised farmers to avoid harvesting during wet or rainy conditions, as this reduces avocado quality and shelf life, and emphasised the need to harvest at the correct time based on local environmental conditions.
Encouraging sustainable farming practices
He further encouraged the use of natural inputs instead of synthetic boosters to protect soil health and ensure long-term sustainability.
Farmers encouraged to participate in future sessions
Melrose Ramokonyane from the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development urged farmers to actively participate in study groups to strengthen their skills.
She announced that the next session will include a visit to a commercial nursery to further enhance learning.
