2 Giyani filling stations targeted in separate robberies
Police are investigating two separate filling station robberies in Makosha and Dzumeri, including an attempted safe blast using explosives.
LIMPOPO – Giyani police are investigating two separate incidents at filling stations in Makosha and Dzumeri villages on Monday, May 18.
The cases include business robbery, business burglary, attempted murder, and contravention of the Explosives Act.
First incident: Makosha village
In the first incident, which occurred during the early hours of Monday morning at a filling station in Makosha village, two security officers were accosted by a group of about 15 armed individuals.
The perpetrators reportedly overpowered and tied up the security officers before locking them inside a toilet attached to the offices.
Safe forced open with grinder
They used tools, including a grinder, to force open a safe and stole cash, cellphones, and several items, including equipment and appliances.
A truck driver who was at the premises during the robbery was also reportedly assaulted and robbed of cash and a cellphone before the group fled the scene on foot.
Second incident: Dzumeri village
In a separate incident, also on Monday morning, at a filling station in Dzumeri village, the perpetrators gained entry into the office through a hole made in the back of the building.
They attempted to blast open a safe using explosives. Although the safe was damaged, no cash was stolen.
The robbers took a data storage device before fleeing the scene.
Shots fired at police
Upon noticing police, the robbers fired shots in the direction of the officers. Police returned fire, and they fled the scene.
Cases opened
Police have opened cases of business robbery, business burglary, attempted murder, and contravention of the Explosives Act for further investigation.
