6 injured at Phalaborwa drag race

Six people were injured when a car lost control and crashed into spectators during a drag racing event in Phalaborwa.

PHALABORWA – Six people were injured when a Mercedes-Benz lost control and crashed into spectators during a drag racing event on Sunday, June 7.

The incident occurred along the road between Namakgale Cemetery and Makhushane Camp, where the event was taking place.

Two seriously injured

According to information received, two people sustained serious injuries and were transported to Maphutha Malatji Hospital for treatment.

Two others received medical attention at the same hospital and were discharged later that day, while another two injured individuals were taken to Hoedspruit Private Hospital.

Police investigation underway

According to provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, the matter is still under investigation.

“The police managed to speak to the driver of the Mercedes-Benz and are currently interviewing witnesses regarding the incident. Investigations are continuing,” he said.

Emergency services and law enforcement officials responded to the scene shortly after the incident.
