HOEDSPRUIT – Hoedspruit is the setting for a new online murder mystery series, Hat Creek, which combines suspense, humour and familiar local faces to create a fictional story set against the backdrop of the town.

A stranger drawn into murder

Written by Nicolaas Ackermann, the series follows Adam Woods, a man with a vague and mysterious background whose life changes after he encounters a mysterious woman at a local bar.

The evening takes an unexpected turn when police arrive, drawing Woods into a murder plot that forces him to question everything he thought he knew about Hat Creek, the fictional version of Hoedspruit featured in the series.

From Europe to Hoedspruit

Ackermann, who has written mystery stories for the past decade, traditionally based his stories in European settings. However, the idea of using Hoedspruit as a setting emerged earlier this year and quickly developed into Hat Creek.

According to Ackermann, Hoedspruit provides a unique backdrop for a mystery because it combines natural beauty, wildlife, tourism and a diverse community.

“The Blyde River Canyon, mountain range, wildlife estates, Kruger, and wide variety of people make for an excellent place to stage a murder mystery story,” he said.

Episodes released online

Unlike traditional theatre productions, Hat Creek is a written series published online.

Episodes are released through links shared on Ackermann’s Facebook account and in Hoedspruit Facebook groups, allowing readers to follow the unfolding mystery from episode to episode.

The project has been in development for approximately six months, with about half of the first season’s 10 episodes already released.

“The only challenge was probably mapping out the mystery across 10 episodes. But we’re close to finishing now,” Ackermann said.

Touch of Africa is supporting the project as a sponsor, while local businesses can purchase advertising space within the story.

The series currently reaches nearly 3 000 people.

Local faces in the cover art

A particularly local element is the use of familiar community members in the cover art.

“We take Hoedspruit’s most popular faces and faces that look ideal for certain characters, then we draft them into the cover art as a way to make it even more Hoedspruit,” Ackermann said.

Adam Woods and Juliette Beaumont are central characters, with Bruce Topham and Mariska Esterhuizen allowing their faces to be used for the characters.

More mysteries to come

Ackermann hopes the series will give residents another reason to talk about their town.

“I hope to add another element of intrigue to the town,” he said.

Future seasons are already being considered, including Hat Creek Origins, which could feature standalone thriller stories exploring the community in greater depth.
