Tzaneen mayor hosts Comrades Marathon send-off dinner

The evening combined sport, remembrance and community pride as leaders gathered to encourage local athletes.

TZANEEN – The Greater Tzaneen Municipality Mayor, Odas Ngobeni, hosted a glamorous send-off dinner for the 2026 Comrades Marathon participants. The event was held at Karibu Resort outside Tzaneen on Wednesday evening.

Ngobeni, who has been in office for just over two weeks, said the initiative was personal to him, which is why he swiftly organised a special gala to honour the runners.

Through the event, he also paid tribute to his late elder brother, who passed away last year shortly after completing the Comrades Marathon. His brother had participated in 25 Comrades Marathons, as well as numerous other races.

“We did not call you here because we have anything to give, but to say thank you for putting the Tzaneen flag up high and for promoting healthy living,” the mayor said.

He added that the municipality is committed to partnering with organisations in future to help make runners’ preparations easier.

Cohen Shipalana of Letaba Road Runners spoke on behalf of athletes from various running clubs in Tzaneen. He said being honoured in their hometown was an unforgettable experience.

“Thank you for your first investment in the runners as the municipality. We don’t expect much, but this gratitude is more than enough. Knowing that our community and leaders are supporting us is a cherry on top,” he said.
