FPA launches 2026 fire season
The Letaba Fire Protection Association has marked the start of fire season, with controlled burns permitted until July 31.
TZANEEN – The Letaba Fire Protection Association (FPA) has officially marked the start of the 2026 fire season, calling on landowners, farmers, and residents across the region to remain vigilant and practise responsible burning as fire risks increase during the dry winter months.
The fire season officially commenced on June 1, with Letaba FPA reminding communities that fire prevention is a shared responsibility.
Early reporting of uncontrolled fires can help reduce damage to lives, property, agriculture, and the environment.
Controlled burns permitted – but with conditions
As part of its seasonal awareness campaign, the organisation announced that controlled burns will be permitted until July 31, provided landowners obtain valid burning permits before conducting any burning activities.
The permits are required to ensure that weather conditions and fuel loads are suitable and safe for controlled burning.
The FPA also reminded residents that no burning is permitted on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, or public holidays.
Officials stressed that uncontrolled fires can spread rapidly during winter, posing significant threats to communities, farms, forestry operations, and natural ecosystems.
Aviation and ground support team ready
In preparation for the season, the Letaba FPA Base has welcomed a team of aviation and ground support professionals who will play a critical role in firefighting operations throughout the coming months.
The team includes:
- Helicopter pilots
- Spotter pilots
- Aviation support crews
- Refuelling teams
- Ground support personnel
They will assist in detecting, monitoring, and responding to veld and forest fires across the region.
Working alongside partners such as the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Working on Fire, Kishugu, local municipalities, and environmental agencies, Letaba FPA aims to ensure a safe and effective fire season.
