Tzaneen entrepreneur grows ice business with NYDA support
A visit by the mayor highlighted how targeted funding is helping young people build sustainable businesses in the district.
TZANEEN – Greater Tzaneen Municipality Mayor Odas Ngobeni has praised the success of young entrepreneur Khutso Maponya, whose ice manufacturing business has grown from a small startup into a thriving enterprise supplying customers across the district.

Ngobeni visited Maponya’s business in Lenyenye to witness firsthand the progress made since the entrepreneur received support from the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA).
From small funding to growing enterprise
Maponya’s entrepreneurial journey began in 2021 when he secured funding of R50 000 from the NYDA. The funding enabled him to establish and expand his ice cube manufacturing operations, laying the foundation for future growth.
The business continued to gain momentum, leading to a second round of support worth R98 750. The additional funding allowed Maponya to further develop his operations and increase production capacity to meet growing demand.
Business expands across the district
Today, the business supplies ice cubes and purified water to a wide range of customers, including restaurants, retailers and other businesses throughout the district.
The enterprise has expanded beyond its original location and now operates in the Nkowankowa industrial area, positioning it for continued growth.
Job creation and local impact
Beyond generating income, the business has also created employment opportunities, contributing to local economic development and providing jobs for members of the community.
During the visit, Ngobeni commended Maponya’s commitment, perseverance and entrepreneurial spirit, describing his journey as a powerful example of what can be achieved when young people are given access to opportunities and support.
He said the success of the business demonstrates the important role that youth entrepreneurship can play in stimulating economic activity, creating jobs and building sustainable local enterprises.
