Resident revives Longtill sports ground for local children

What began as one resident's vision has become a shared community asset, bringing families together through sport and recreation.

PHALABORWA – Resident Samuel Sekgoka’s ambitious plan to restore the overgrown sports ground in Longtill, Ward 7, came into fruition as the community has witnessed the successful completion of the project.

This comes a month after the Herald reported on Sekgoka’s ambitious plan.

Today, the long-neglected field has been transformed into a clean and functional sports ground.

Sekgoka, founder of The Cruise Tutoring and Aftercare, launched the project on May 18 by hiring a TLB to clear the overgrown sports field before hiring a grader to level it two weeks later. He personally funded the initiative at a total cost of approximately R20 000.

Community celebrates restored facility

On Saturday, June 27, hundreds of children and parents gathered at the newly restored facility for a community event organised by Sekgoka in partnership with Ward 7 Cllr Mampuele Sekoele under the theme Moswa Ema o Bolele.

Sport, fun and encouragement

The day commenced with a u/17 football tournament involving four local teams. Youngstars FC and Namakgale TJ FC played to a 1-1 draw, while Predators FC secured a 1-0 victory over The Cruise FC to advance to the final. Predators FC were crowned champions after defeating Namakgale TJ FC 1-0 in the final.

Children enjoyed various activities such as jumping castles, dance competitions, and prize giveaways. They also expressed the support they seek from parents and community leaders, while some became emotional, celebrating the reopening of the long-neglected sports facility.

Sekoele said the event was organised to celebrate children and allow them to relax after months of schoolwork.

Investing in the next generation

Moreover, Sekgoka encouraged the children to remain focused on their education and to believe in their abilities.

“Never stop believing in yourselves. Take education seriously because the knowledge you gain today will open doors tomorrow,” he said.

Children expressed their appreciation to Sekgoka, saying the restored sports ground would provide them with a safe place to play, build friendships, and develop their sporting talents.

Sekoele also praised Sekgoka’s dedication and investment in the development of local youth.

Sekgoka emphasised that the initiative was motivated by a desire to uplift young people and promote local talent, not by personal recognition.
