LIMPOPO – With just a week remaining before the August 1 firebreak compliance deadline, the Letaba Fire Protection Association (LFPA) is urging all landowners to ensure their firebreaks are in place to reduce the risk of devastating veldfires during the upcoming fire season.

A legal requirement, not a suggestion

The association reminded landowners that establishing compliant firebreaks is not only a legal requirement but also one of the most effective ways to prevent the rapid spread of uncontrolled veldfires.

Well-maintained firebreaks can help protect lives, homes, employees, neighbouring properties, livestock, crops, plantations, infrastructure and the natural environment. They also provide firefighters with valuable access and an opportunity to contain fires before they become unmanageable.

Last-minute prep carries real risk

The LPFA cautioned against delaying preparations, noting that changing weather conditions, equipment breakdowns, and limited opportunities for safe burning can make last-minute firebreak construction difficult.

By preparing early, landowners can ensure that firebreaks are created safely, responsibly, and in accordance with legal requirements.

Communities in Letsitele, Tzaneen, Haenertsburg, Modjadjiskloof, Politsi, Mooketsi, and surrounding areas are reminded that fire prevention is a shared responsibility, with proper firebreaks helping to protect entire communities.

“Be prepared. Be compliant. Be responsible,” the association urged.

“The best time to complete your firebreaks is now, because when an uncontrolled veldfire starts, preparation time is already over.”
