PHALABORWA – Maphokwane High School in Mashishimale is celebrating the outstanding achievement of Makoma Mokgokong, who represented the school at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Oral History Competition, held recently at Greenside Primary School in Polokwane.

Gold medal secures spot at nationals

The 14-year-old competed in the story writing and storytelling category, where she showed exceptional confidence, creativity, historical knowledge and storytelling ability.

Her hard work paid off with a first place finish, earning her a certificate, a gold medal and a trophy, as well as the opportunity to represent Limpopo at the national round of the competition.

Teachers played key mentorship role

Mokgokong’s success reflects both her own dedication and talent, and the support of her history teachers, Nonjabulo Ndimande and Maphanga, who mentored her throughout the process.

The teachers helped her with historical research, story development, writing, presentation, and storytelling skills, building her confidence and helping her present her work effectively.

Their commitment highlights the important role passionate educators play in identifying and nurturing learners’ talents.

Building on earlier success

This isn’t Mokgokong’s first provincial-level achievement. In June, she took part in the Robben Island Essay Competition, an annual academic contest for South African high school learners focused on democracy, history and heritage.

She travelled to Polokwane as part of the competition and, guided by her teachers, successfully progressed to the next stage.

The school congratulated Mokgokong on her exceptional achievements.
