Unathi’s new book challenges women’s roles in society

“What happens if I never get married? Do my value decline and what does God have to say about that?”

These were the questions that triggered, Unathi Mabunda’s new book titled, ‘Girls prepare, Boys show up’.
Although she wrote the book primarily with the girl-child in mind, the book is for everyone, as it addresses societal issues.
Mabunda is a motivational speaker originally from Mpumalanga, but currently resides in Phalaborwa and works in the financial department of one of the mines. She has a BCom Law degree and an honours in financial management. She is currently pursuing a masters degree at Liverpool John Moores University.

She told the Herald that society has been consciously and unconsciously grooming girls at a young age to be someone’s husband.
“What are they being trained for, you may ask? To be found worthy candidates as a wife to serve a man.
“People usually say, do not laugh like that, do not sit like that, because you will not find a husband.
“As women and girls we have been told that your wedding day is the best day of your life,” she said.
She says women should not be defined by titles, but their contribution to humanity and society.

Parents need to start teaching their children that their worth is measured by being of service to others.
She does however emphasise that she fully supports marriage and believes that its importance in society can never be underestimated.
Mabunda further adds that as a young woman who is a believer, she also would like to encourage self control when it comes to sexual matters. Young women should attend church not only for the blessing of marriage, but to have a relationship with God first, she says.

She adds that one of the reasons why women leave church is that they wait years without getting married.
The book is R260 if collected and R300 if it has to be couriered.
It is available on Amazon and she hopes that it will be on Takealot soon.
