Handy tips for Sunday’s power outage, before and on the day

The whole of Middelburg and Mhluzi will be without power on Sunday. The planned power cut is said to start at 04:00 on Sunday morning and last until 02:00 on Monday morning.

Here are some handy tips on what to do and how to prepare for the 22 hours without electricity.

Beforehand:

1. Make sure that all your portable lights have been charged or have fresh batteries.

2. Stock up on candles

3. Buy mosquito repellent as your electrical mosquito repellents will not work.

4. Charge your laptop, phone or tablet beforehand so you have enough battery life to watch a movie.

5.Charge your power bank if you have one to extend your phone’s battery life.

6. Fill up your gas bottles.

7. Choose what you are going to eat on Sunday the day before, leave meat to thaw over night, to avoid opening and closing the fridge and freezer too many times when the power is out.

8. If you plan to go to a restaurant on Sunday, it might be a good idea to phone ahead and find out if they are open. Book a table, it might become busy.

On Sunday:

1. Study in sunlight:

If you have children writing exams at the moment, make sure they put in a good study-session during the day, when there is still sunlight.

2. Save you alarm’s back up battery:

If you have an alarm system in your house, you can unplug the system from the backup battery when you wake up on Sunday morning and reconnect it on Sunday night to make sure you have enough battery life to set your alarm when you go to sleep.

3. Play card games:

You can involve the entire family or play a game-for-one like Emperor.

4. Tackle that cupboard/room you never have time for:

Declutter your life.

5. Go for a long walk:

Get some fresh air. Its not like the television is working.

6. Look on social media platforms for restaurants that have a generator and go have something to eat.

7. Read that book you never have time for.

8. Have a braai, it’s the South African thing to do.

9. Visit the Middelburg dam

10. Go have a pick-nick at Lions Park in Kanonkop.

11. Go fishing at the Dennesig dam.

12. Travel to Loskop:

Enjoy the scenery and have lunch at one of the many restaurants along the way.
