Thousands of runners, spectators and supporters are expected to descend on Middelburg tomorrow, August 8, as the annual Greatest Train Race returns.

The day might bring along a few road closures but, more importantly, it brings much-needed fundraising for local charities.

GTR back on track

The race returns this weekend with athletes from across South Africa taking on one of Mpumalanga’s best-known charity road races.

The annual event is organised by the Rotary Clubs of Middelburg and eMalahleni, with the Mpumalanga Railway Company, and hosted by the Eskom Athletics Club MPU.

Funds raised each year help Rotary projects that support children, older persons and vulnerable members of the community.

This year’s finish venue has moved to the Steve Tshwete Municipal Grounds at the corner of Walter Sisulu Street and Hospital Road, where races will start at 07:00.

‘Katryn’ the racing train

One of the event’s biggest attractions is the return of the historic train ride.

‘Kartryn’ the train returns home to the Middelburg Train Station this year.

Organizers said, “Get ready to witness her magnificent steam engine and coaches’ debut at the GTR Race!”

There are only 300 seats available on the ‘Katryn’ train and will be booked on a first-come, first-served basis tomorrow morning at 05:00 at the station.

‘Katryn’ will be racing alongside the runners, starting at 07:00, all the way to the Steve Tshwete Municipal Grounds.

Plan your drive

Motorists should expect temporary road closures from 06:00, particularly along sections of the R104 and around the finish venue near Middelburg Provincial Hospital while shuttle buses depart.

Traffic officials will be on site, and drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travelling time tomorrow morning.

Wheels on the bus

Participants must use the official shuttle buses departing from the finish venue between 05:15 and 06:30, with no late arrivals allowed to start.

Organisers have urged athletes to arrive early and follow the colour-coded signs to the correct departure points.

• Green: 24km runners and relay legs 1, 2 and 3.
• Blue: 11.5km runners and relay leg 4.
• Red: 4.9km runners and relay leg 5.

Parking arrangements

Parking areas open from 04:30.
Available parking includes:

• Parking Area A: Guarded parking next to the event venue in Hospital Road.
• Parking Area B: Secure parking in Olifant Street next to Middelburg Primary School.

A R50 parking fee applies, with proceeds benefitting the school.

The Greatest Train Race has become one of the town’s signature sporting events, combining community spirit, athletics and fundraising to change the lives of local families.
