Municipalities awarded for their greening efforts

Three municipalities were awarded for their efforts during the 2025 Green Municipality Competition, with the winner walking away with R50 000.

Fetakgomo Tubatse, Makhuduthamaga and Elias Motsoaledi local municipalities were recognised for their environmental initiatives during the 2025 Green Municipality Competition on Monday.

Fetakgomo Tubatse scooped the first position, winning R50 000, followed by Makhuduthamaga and Elias Motsoaledi in second and third positions, respectively.

Makhuduthamaga won R40 000, and Elias Motsoaledi walked away with R25 000. The event was held at the Sekhukhune District Municipality’s council chamber in Groblersdal.

The initiative recognises the institutions’ commitment to environmental best practices and sustainability.

The municipalities were taken through an extensive waste environmental assessment prior to the competition.

The focus was on waste management initiatives and strategies for the eradication of illegal dumping sites through their Extended Public Works Programme and yellow fleet.

The Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism is behind the awards.
