Facebook page drums up support for tornado victims
Tembisa residents are now cleaning up all the broken pieces from their shacks.
Two Kempton Park residents have started a Facebook group called Help Winnie Mandela Section Tembisa to assist families who lost their homes and belongings in Tuesday’s tornado which swept through Tembisa, reports the Kempton Express.
The strong wind blew off the roofs of about 200 households in Winnie Mandela, leaving an estimated 400 people displaced. Other areas damaged by the storm include 100 shacks and 20 houses in Hospitalview.
Kempton Park resident, Brenda Smit said her domestic worker could not attend work on Wednesday morning as she had no dry clothes or a house anymore. “All her belongings were taken in the tornado yesterday. They are now cleaning up all the broken pieces from their shacks.
“We have created this group to ask people in and around Kempton Park to assist us with unwanted building materials to rebuild their shacks, for example wood, steel roof sheeting, scrap materials, card boards, big oil tins, food, clothes, blankets and mattresses.
“People can bring it to our house and we will take it to Tembisa, or they are more than welcome to deliver the goods themselves at Winnie Mandela section. These people desperately need our help in any way we can help them,” she said.
