Transport MMC Kenny Kunene leads Johannesburg Roads Agency maintenance operation in Rabie Ridge

Johannesburg roads officials have launched Operation Restore in Ward 80 to fix long-standing drainage problems and repaint faded road markings.

City of Johannesburg Transport MMC Kenny Kunene has led a joint operation with the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) board and CEO Zweli Nyathi to address long-standing drainage and road marking issues in Rabie Ridge.

Teams met at Freedom Drive and Rietduiker Street, opposite a local garage, to begin work under Operation Restore in Ward 80 today. On Steve Tshwete Street in Ivory Park, crews used an excavator and a Jet-Vac truck to expose a junction box and jet a pipe to clear a blocked storm water system that has caused repeated flooding.

Addressing road safety in Rabie Ridge, especially on Stilt Road, JRA teams repainted faded road markings that motorists said were dangerous at night.

Kunene said road marking is continuous maintenance that fades over time, adding that leadership must fight to ensure safety for motorists.

Local motorist Sibusiso Khoza welcomed the project, saying faded lines made night driving dangerous and contributed to accidents, expressing relief that the area is now safer.

The Midrand Reporter approached JRA for comment and is awaiting a response.
