On 31 July Cresset House held an open day for members of the community to learn about the facility and have a look around their premises.

Cresset House in Glen Austin is a residential and work facility for adults with intellectual disabilities. The villagers do organic farming, woodwork, sewing and baking on a daily basis and their products are available to the public.

The open day started with tea and snacks from the Cresset House bakery. The guests were entertained with performances by the villagers and by learners from Cresset House’s satellite workshop in Ivory Park, the Khanya Centre.

CEO of Cresset House, Elrina van Schaardenburgh, expressed her gratitude to members of the community for their support, but also reminded them about Cresset House’s need for debit orders. She said, “If you can set up a debit order to Cresset House for just R50 per month it means that we can rely on a sustainable, consistent income that just makes the load a little bit easier.”

The program concluded with a prize giving where Gareth Kerr and Robert McCue were awarded for giving up smoking for 12 months. Wayne and Bradley Cornick were given a certificate for living at Cresset House for 10 years, and Julliet Moremi was given the staff recognition award.

After the program, all the delicious baked goods, organic vegetables and crocheted items produced by the Cresset House villagers were on sale.
