Housing department plants garden

MIDRAND - Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (CRUM) and the housing department in Region A spent their Mandela Day giving back to the young ladies at the Miriam Makeba Centre for Girls in President Park.

The staff brought buckets and boots so that they could plant a backyard vegetable garden at the centre. The aim being for the girls to be able to see the seeds blossom, grow and become food.

This was done to give the girls a sense of purpose and teach them about health.

Late Harvest caterers and events, a local catering company, also came through on the day to donate food parcels to the girls and the staff. Mashudo Mills, the company’s director said, “We salute the hard work of the staff at the center. We know that with their support the girls will have a great future.”

The Miriam Makeba Centre for Girls was founded by the world-renowned singer in 2003. It is a safe haven for destitute or abused girls between the ages of 11 and 18. The centre aims to bring hope into the lives of the girls and strives to equip each of them with the life skills they need to build a future and overcome the adversity they have had to endure.
