Come see a fair lady upon a white horse

KYALAMI - At the Lipizzaner Centre in Kyalami, a team of fair ladies upon majestic white stallions perform to music every Sunday morning at 10.30am.

“The tradition started over 400 years ago in Vienna where the famous white stallions and their riders displayed the most exquisite skills in horsemanship. In the famous Spanish Riding School even today, audiences take with them a memory of nobility in art and discipline from an age of splendour,” said Maureen Dalglish of the Lipizzaner Centre.

She said Lipizzaners were known throughout Europe as being the strongest and most courageous war horses of the age and the jumps that have been developed in performance come from the jumps they were taught centuries ago to protect their riders in the heat of battle.

“We in South Africa are so privileged to have these magical Lipizzaners of ancient breed and it is now up to us to preserve this great tradition,” Dalglish said.

She mentioned that one way the public could help preserve the art of the Lipizzaner was by supporting their weekly shows, which are held on a Sunday, and attending the special events that are help at the centre. She said the next special event the Lipizzaner Centre would hold is the Barn Dance, which would take place on 30 August at the centre in Maple Road, Kyalami.
