Kyalami aims for a united front
KYALAMI - The saying goes, 'Together we stand, divided we fall,' and it is this concept that the Greater Kyalami Conservancy is focusing on.
The conservancy wants to appear as a united force to the City of Johannesburg when discussing encroaching development, municipal rates, crime and environmental issues in the area. The committee members believe that forming a Greater Kyalami Conservancy Residents Association will create this united front.
The conservancy held a public meeting at the Beaulieu College Pavilion to inform residents of their plans. This was an initial meeting to determine the community’s views on a united residents association and more information would follow.
Committee member Darryl van Niekerk said, “The City of Joburg sees Kyalami as a disparate group. We are not as effective when we act separately so we want to create a contiguous landmass with a single residents association, with the same objectives and ideals,” said van Niekerk.
He said this would avoid the duplication of efforts by the various residents associations, reduce the demand on a few individuals and consolidate the community’s energies and finances to preserve the heritage and environment of the area.
“This is not to re-brand the area and lose individual groups or areas’ identities but to form a support base,” said van Niekerk.
Each residents association’s chairperson will be asked to give their stance and determine their community’s views on a united association.
The association will be representative of the area with at least one committee member from each area, and of the Midrand Crime Sector 4 Forum and equestrian community.
All community members can register as members, but voting members can only be landowners and have only one vote despite the number of properties they may own.
The chairpersons of Beaulieu and Glenferness residents association have already expressed support for the united residents association.
