Music artist talks Crayon Boxes
MIDRAND - Midrand Reporter and Mix FM sat down with Michael Lowman (26), while he was in Midrand to discuss his new album.
The Durban-born singer-songwriter said he was enjoying being back in South Africa.
“I spent a bit of time in America and my music is well known there, but I decided to come back to South Africa a year ago to promote my music here. As a South African I want my music to have great success at home too.
“I grew up in a home filled with the sound of the Beatles – I think my love for music was evident at an early age. When I turned 17 I started playing the guitar and wrote some songs. Over the years I have been inspired by many musicians such as American singer John Mayer, and my good friend Ross Jack, a South African artist.
“What is most exciting is that my debut album came out on 30 September and is available on iTunes. The album is called Crayon Boxes.”
Michael also recorded an EP in Las Vegas, In My Own Words, and moved to Los Angeles shortly thereafter. A few of his songs were played on the reality TV show, Keeping up with the Kardashians.
“That was a highlight for me, it was a great achievement. I hope my music will do well enough in South Africa and one day climb the charts. My single called Your Lovin’ Aint Right got to number one on Kia charts and number five on 5 FM Top 40.”
A couple of years ago Lowman spent some time shadowing his uncle, a medical doctor, who worked with people living with HIV/Aids in KwaZulu-Natal. “While in the States I was involved with an organisation called Keep a Child Alive. As musicians we have a responsibility to also highlight challenges that may affect our communities. It is our way of giving back.”
