War against waste in Region A
MIDRAND - Illegal dumping has plagued many areas in Midrand and Fourways, most recently with dumping along the R55 in Blue Hills.
This may now be a thing of the past.
Pikitup, the City of Joburg’s waste management entity, has committed to throw its full weight in support of the campaign, War Against Waste in an effort to fight against illegal dumping and littering.
Pikitup staff will be embarking on friendly ‘protest’ marches to alert residents of Joburg on the dangers of littering and illegal dumping as well as of the benefits of recycling. The teams will be visiting all seven regions on a seven-week blitz, spending five days per region. They will be engage with the communities, residents and businesses in creating a better, healthier and more sustainable city that is free of litter, illegal dumping, and where children can play in clean parks.
The campaign will start in Region A from 14 to 18 October that includes Rabbi Ridge, Ivory Park, Kya Sand Informal settlement and Diepsloot. The mission is to change the mindsets of residents and businesses, and get them to start recycling and separating at source.
Pikitup has tried different methods of getting its message across. Often this was met with resistance because the seriousness of what was being communicated was not properly conveyed or there was a total disregard for the law.
Musa Jack, executive director of waste minimisation strategy and programmes at Pikitup said, “As part of the mayoral project, we have heeded the call by the mayor and the Member of the Mayoral Committee to make sure that separation at source becomes a voiced dialogue in media houses, households, businesses, schools, taxi/bus ranks and on the street.”
Mayor Parks Tau has declared war on the owners of illegal dumping sites after a recent tour of the city. The mayor with his 10-member mayoral committee went to see for themselves the true extent of development challenges the city faced and health concerns that arose from illegal dumping.
