Lights out for Sun Valley

SUN VALLEY - A Sun Valley resident, who did not want to be named, has said that endless power cuts in the area were starting to affect his business.

The latest power outage was on 14 October.

“Since January we have had 40 power failures. Sometimes birds fly onto the transformers and power goes off, but mostly power failures in our area are due to poor infrastructure and poor servicing. After a lot of complaints customer care decided to assist.

“Two weeks later I phoned customer care and I was told that the request had been approved, that the issue will be looked into. A month later no one has followed up on the issue. On average, power failures last between 4 to 6 hours but sometimes they stretch to half a day or a whole day. I run a business that relies heavily on power: I have had monetary loss due to power failures.”

Sun Valley Residents Association chairperson Pierre Hefer confirmed that the area has had consistent, extended power failures.

“We have reported the issue to Eskom. Every week for the past three months we have had problems with power. At times we are informed of the problem and (its) causes but other times we are left in the dark about what caused the power failure.

“What has been frustrating for us is that faults reported early in the evening are (only) attended to the following day,” said Hefer.

A spokesperson for Eskom, Dikatso Mothae, said, “We are aware of the power failures. We are investigating the causes. Currently, power has been restored to the customers.”
