Potjie kos for conservation

MIDRAND - The Gauteng-based regions of the South African National Parks Honorary Rangers gathered at Rietvlei Nature Reserve to compete in the annual potjiekos competition.

The event, hosted by the Midrand Region, was an attempt to foster a spirit of co-operation among the various regions to contribute to conservation within our national parks.

Currently, funds raised by the organisation are being allocated mainly to rhino conservation and counter-poaching activities. The South African National Parks Honorary Rangers is a registered public benefit and non-profit organisation, and every cent raised goes directly towards conservation. During 2012 the organisation contributed R44 million worth of support, both direct and indirect, to South African National Parks.

The potjie competition, held at the Rietvlei Dam Coffee Shop, was judged by three expert entertainers and braaiers, namely Gareth ‘Braaiboy’ Daniell, ‘Bring&Braai’ winner Borries Bornman and Thys ‘Die Bosveldklong’.

They thoroughly enjoyed the various potjies they judged, together with the inevitable ‘bribes’ that were presented in an attempt to sway the judges’ decision.

Some bribes were subtle, such as an exotic drink, a tasty dessert or a song and a dance, while others were more blatant, like a sealed envelope containing 100 000 Zimbabwean dollars.

Johannesburg Region was awarded the winning trophy for their delicious ostrich potjie (and Amarula bribe), while Midrand Region and East Rand Region won prizes for the best dressed and most ‘spirited’ team respectively.
